SEVEN Fund Announces the Grand Prize Winner of the
‘I Am an Entrepreneur’ Photography Competition
The SEVEN Fund is pleased to announce the grand prize winner of our 2011 ‘I Am an Entrepreneur’ photography competition. The grand prize of $1000 was awarded to Mr. Daniel Rathbun of Vietnam. Mr. Rathbun’s photo was chosen by the SEVEN Team as the favorite entry amongst the finalist submissions selected in 2011.
Daniel Rathbun of Vietnam contributed the winning photo. Mr. Rathbun says of the photo:
“This was taken at the old Imperial Palace in Hue, Vietnam which was heavily damaged during the US-Vietnam war. A local construction company was engaged in restoration of part of the complex.”
Our jury chose the winning entry for its striking composition. The photograph illustrates that critical yet elusive component in entrepreneurship, the network effect. The workers in this photograph are nodal points in global networks of trade, knowledge, and innovation..

Our jury says of the photo:
“Off to work in the salt mines is a threadbare maxim to many, symbolizing hard, thankless work. This photo reminds us to be mindful that in a globalizing world, where forces collide onto the shore of small economies like a tsunami wave; that too many people still lead lives without aspirations and hope. Globalization is an amoral convergence of forces. It is up to each of us who have already benefited from the asymmetry to use these forces for good, to find ways to connect the poor into networks of industry, trade, and learning that upgrades and improves lives.”
Entrepreneurs create products, services and jobs. They expand economies, improve people's lives, provide employment (high and rising wages) and bring about competition. A competitive environment, in turn, gives rise to efficiency, meritocracy and further innovations and entrepreneurial drive.
The potent combination of entrepreneurship and technological innovation can forge an environment that is conducive to further enterprise, involving even government policy in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
