Competition Winners > January 2010

The SEVEN Fund is pleased to recognize our January 2010 winner and two honorable mentions for the “I am an Entrepreneur” photography competition.

Saikat Mukherjee

Saikat Mukherjee

West Bengal, India

Saikat Mukherjee of India contributed the winning photo.  Mr. Mukherjee says of the photo:

“The photograph was taken in Purulia, West Bengal, India, in 2006 and depicts an entrepreneur in action. She is a basket-maker who not only makes the baskets, but also goes to local markets traditionally called ‘hut’ to sell them in order to help her family.”

The jury found the photo striking in its use of photographic technique; she is an entrepreneur in the midst of the creation process, surrounded by her work, and yet, she conveys optimism and earnestness even as she looks forward to the  finished product.

Honorable Mentions:

Luca Renoldi

Luca Renoldi

Austria Luca Renoldi of Italy contributed this honorable mention photograph. The jury felt that the photo, of a Latin American violinist who had emigrated to Austria, portrayed the loneliness of an entrepreneur as he or she pursues a vision that no one else can see.

Md. Akhlas Uddin

Md. Akhlas Uddin

Bangladesh Md. Akhlas Uddin contributed this honorable mention photo of a mother and son collecting wood in the Bangladeshi countryside.  The jury commented that this photo evoked the ambiguity of entrepreneurship: one does not know if the entrepreneur is the mother, or the child.  But the photograph portrays hope across a generation.

Entrepreneurs create products, services and jobs. They expand economies, improve people's lives, provide employment (high and rising wages) and bring about competition. A competitive environment, in turn, gives rise to efficiency, meritocracy and further innovations and entrepreneurial drive.

The potent combination of entrepreneurship and technological innovation can forge an environment that is conducive to further enterprise, involving even government policy in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
