“I Am An Entrepreneur” Photo Competition
Competition Winners > March 2010
The SEVEN Fund is pleased to recognize our March 2010 winner and two honorable mentions for the “I am an Entrepreneur” photography competition.
Joydeep Mukherjee
West Bengal, India
Joydeep Mukherjee of India contribued the winning photo. Mr. Mukherjee says of the photo:
“This photograph was taken in Digha, a seaside town in West Bengal. A fisherman was working in the waves, carrying the net on his shoulder against the tide so that he could catch fish and sell them at market.”
The jury found this photo interesting in its use of photographic technique. Oftentimes, people think of the private sector as big businesses only, but this photo reminds us that a fisherman is the private sector.
Honorable Mentions:
Melody Wilson
Ethiopia In the words of the photographer: “This photo was taken in the biggest landfill in Ethiopia. Sfleg, the subject the photograph, and about 120 other people work there, digging through the trash and searching for things that they can eat or recycle. I am part of a group of young artists who decided to change the world, our main focus being extreme poverty. We have been spreading the word about the conditions here with our art, and have gathered up enough finances to rent a house. Sfleg and 12 other girls come to sew and make t-shirts every day, and no longer have to work in the dump.”
Wong Chi Keung
China In the words of the photographer: “The subject of this photograph, Mr. Chan, is one of the fishermen from the small fishing village of Fujian in China. As the demand for sea laver is increasing, fishermen are requesting loans to invest in sea laver cultivation. The support from the local government has provided the fishermen with access to the international market, especially in Japan and South Korea.”
Entrepreneurs create products, services and jobs. They expand economies, improve people's lives, provide employment (high and rising wages) and bring about competition. A competitive environment, in turn, gives rise to efficiency, meritocracy and further innovations and entrepreneurial drive.
The potent combination of entrepreneurship and technological innovation can forge an environment that is conducive to further enterprise, involving even government policy in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
