Pioneers of Prosperity Documentary
The inaugural Legatum Pioneers of Prosperity Program ran in 2007 in East Africa, generously supported by Legatum Global Development and the John Templeton Foundation. This award program is part of the Global Pioneers of Prosperity Program run by the SEVEN Fund and OTF Group. This program finds and recognizes role model businesses in the world’s poorest nations, with a specific focus on entrepreneurs running sustainable, for-profit companies that offer unique value propositions to customers, owners,
workers, and future generations.¹
The inaugural Legatum Awards Program, featured in this documentary Unlocking Africa, was
open to businesses operating in five countries in East Africa—Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda,
Tanzania and Uganda. The winners were selected through a rigorous, data-driven process
vetted by Ernst & Young , from a competitive pool of 453 applicants.

Entrepreneurs create products, services and jobs. They expand economies, improve people's lives, provide employment (high and rising wages) and bring about competition. A competitive environment, in turn, gives rise to efficiency, meritocracy and further innovations and entrepreneurial drive.
The potent combination of entrepreneurship and technological innovation can forge an environment that is conducive to further enterprise, involving even government policy in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
